Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when shopping for a new sleeping pad. There are three types out there: foam sleeping pads, self-inflating sleeping pads, and air pads, as well as some hybrid insulated air pads that are sort of self inflating. Foam pads are light but bulky. Self inflating pads, popularized in the 1980s, tend to bulky but are great for car camping.
